Weep. Shiver. Slam your head against the wall. But the truth remains the truth.
I say this because there seems to be an unspoken prejudice among the Cosplay Community that only Asians can cosplay well, and that everybody else, especially Americans cannot cosplay. Wow. It’s sad that some people are so closed minded, negative, and stereotypical.
Don’t think Asians are safe from this subtle form of racism either, since Filipino cosplayers a.k.a. Pinoy cosplay are deemed “Failipinos” by these prejudice bunch, and many other non-Japanese cosplayers experience verbal bashing. Basically, many people have this warped idea that "only Japanese people should cosplay." Humorously enough, these are often the same people who don’t have a clue about The History of Cosplay and it’s origins in the United States. Perhaps they need a lesson in What is Cosplay Sad, pathetic creatures . . .
Well, enough about them. Here's a wicked video I found recently:
Not Only Asians Can Cosplay
Part I
Part II
Part III
It’s a great remainder to us that age, gender, race, and sex should never matter, not even in cosplay. And that we're all capable of producing a stunning cosplay, no matter where we come from.
I'd like to add that stereotyping cosplayers by claiming "all [insert name of country] cosplayers suck" is stupid and inaccurate and extremely otaku. Not the "good otaku" btw, I mean the ignorant, creepy Japanophile type. YUCK. There are horrible, low-quality Japanese cosplays out there just as there are high-quality, well-done American and European cosplays. It ultimately goes both ways, and depends on the individual abilities and limitations of each cosplayer, not the color of their skin, their sex, or where they were born. DUH!
But, I'm sure you already knew that. xD
3 quick, but really good, tips for cosplayers:
1. Choose a character you like. It helps to pick someone who matches your body type (tall, short, slim, heavy) etc.
2. Make sure the character you choose has a costume within your skill level. Is their costume something you will be able to sew . . . well? Or will you need the help of cosplay friends/mom/a tailor?
3. Make sure the supplies you will require for your costume are within your budget. Can you afford all the materials, eye contacts, wig, fabrics, paint, glue, etc.?
Best of luck! Anyone can cosplay but follow those tips you are well on your way to a Cosplay for the Win!! . . . and maybe you will be featured in the next “Not only Asians can Cosplay” video. =3
