Plot: The world is split into four nations according to the elements water, fire, earth and air. The people of each nation are able to manipulate the element of their respective homeland through use of a Chinese martial art. They are known as ‘benders.’ Only the Avatar has the ability to learn and manipulate all four elements.

One hundred years before the series began, 12-year-old Aang discovers he is the second-coming of a prominent man. Frightened of the great destiny that awaits him, he escapes his homeland on his flying bison, Appa, but gets trapped in an ice block during a storm. One century later, Katara, a water bender, and her brother Sokka find the young boy still frozen, and awaken him. Aang learns that the world he once knew has been ravaged by war, and is now under the control of the Fire Nation lead by Fire Lord Ozai. In order to stop the Fire Lord Ozai and restore peace to the world Aang, must master all four elements. So with the help of his new friends and flying bison Appa, Aang sets out to master Water, Earth and Fire in hopes of defeating Ozai.

The series' second main character and foil to Aang, is Zuko, the banished Fire Nation prince, obsessed with capturing Aang and turning him over to the Fire Nation to repair his damaged honor.
